Job Description

We are looking for a Payload Connectivity Equipment Specialist to join Airbus Defence & Space in Portsmouth. You will join our Payload Equipment Expertise and Customisation group as an Equipment Specialist, integrated within our Space Engineering group and supporting the Telecom Business Line.

In this key and challenging role you will be the principal point of technical contact between internal and external equipment suppliers and company multidisciplinary project/ production teams, covering the whole product life cycle - from monitoring the development of new equipment (and assessing its readiness to bid) to providing in orbit performance feedback.

You will use your significant design and production experience of Connectivity equipment for space applications, including Waveguides and Coaxial Switches, Couplers, Circulators and RF Harness.

You will be responsible for overseeing Payload Equipment activities across active projects, starting with equipment specification, engineering support to procurement activities, engineering support to reviews within Airbus and also with external suppliers and customers, problem resolution and validation in support to Assembly Integration and Test and concluding with support to in-orbit delivery and long term support to in-orbit operations. The role also encompasses forward looking aspects such as support to the Telecom proposal team, support to R&D, new products introduction and continuous improvement of the tools and processes.

You will work closely with functional specialists (EMC, Radiation, Validation and RF, Electrical and Mechanical Systems) and with the Payload Technical Authority who are tasked with ensuring the design robustness of the equipment. You will also interface directly with the internal procurement organisation and external customers, providing guidance and expertise regarding RF performance/ production issues.

You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).

Tasks and Responsibilities



Working closely with suppliers on equipment production monitoring with a focus on improving OQOTOC (On Quality On Time and On Cost) performance



Taking responsibility with suppliers for equipment development and qualification aspects, including running major reviews with supplier and customer, technical performance, cost and risk.



Providing technical support and risk evaluation during the bid and supplier selection processes



Generation of generic and project-specific procurement specifications



Providing technical support during design and production reviews with suppliers and customers



Leading non-conformance reviews with suppliers



Supporting equipment related validation activities at payload and satellite level

The role requires occasional travel overseas.

Required Skills and Experience



Experience in the design, development and production of RF equipment, as part of a multidisciplinary team



Strong analytical skills and the ability to generate innovative solutions



Experience of working directly with customers /suppliers



The confidence/ability to present complex ideas and concepts to the customer/supplier with authority



Some knowledge of the requirements of the space or military market
