We are looking to appoint an aspiring and talented Environmental or Social Specialist with prior experience in providing Lenders’ Environmental and Social Advisory services and a strong drive to develop professionally in this field.

You will join a team that has established a reputation amongst Multi-lateral Financial Institutions, Equator Principle Financial Institutions and Export Credit Agencies for advising lenders on environmentally and/or socially challenging and complex infrastructure projects. We deliver Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD), environmental and social supervision/monitoring and other environmental and social impact assessment related assignments for flagship Projects in Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia and Africa. The team has recently been awarded a number of internationally high-profile assignments and has strong growth aspirations.

You should have previous experience of applying the environmental and/or social policies and standards of International Financial Institutions (IFIs) such as the International Finance Corporation’s Performance Standards (2012) and World Bank Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines. Technical expertise in an element of the Performance Standards (e.g. land expropriation and resettlement, biodiversity, health and safety, management systems, labour and working conditions etc) will be particularly beneficial. You will have experience of undertaking discreet and standalone tasks on technically complex infrastructure Projects. You will be confident in communicating information to a varied audience in a culturally sensitive way.

Role

Based in Arup ‘Campus’ in Solihull, you will:

*

Report to the Associate leading the Lenders’ Environmental and Social Advisory services

*

Contribute to and manage stand-alone tasks for Lenders Environmental and Social Advisory assignments including due diligence, monitoring and evaluation assignments.

*

Support the team in business development activities, such as preparation of expressions of interest and proposals, promotional and capability materials etc.

*

Help coordinate due diligence, monitoring and evaluation assignments, including subcontractor management.

*

Be accountable for the quality of your own work on time and budget.

*

Be willing to undertake short-term travel to the projects sites overseas.

*

Work independently and manage your own activities with some supervision and guidance on a day-to-day basis

*

Be effective communicator in presenting information in writing as well as verbally

*

Establish and maintain relationship with external stakeholders, and colleagues within Arup

*

Assist in and undertake other tasks as directed, including support to UK infrastructure projects as necessary.

Requirements and skills

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

*

Typically around four years of experience of assessing environmental and/or social impacts, performance and other aspects on infrastructure projects, including for projects financed by international financial institutions (IFIs).

*

Experience of applying internationally recognized environmental and social performance standards (e.g. those of the World Bank Group, EBRD, EIB, ADB, International Labor Organization etc.), including those addressing social aspects, such as land acquisition and resettlement, livelihood restoration, labour and working conditions, community health and safety and stakeholder engagement etc.

*

Experience on working on projects in one or more of the following sectors: Transport infrastructure, Power generation and distribution, Water , Municipal environmental infrastructure and Natural resources.

*

Experience of working on projects, research or development assignments located overseas, for example, in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and preferably Africa, Latin America or Asia.

*

Understanding of typical environmental and social issues arising during development and implementation of projects in developing economies in Eastern Europe, Central Asia Africa, Latin America or Asia.

*

Proven ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

*

Open and sensitive to working in diverse cultural environments.

*

Ability to work calmly under pressure to meet deadlines and to work on multiple tasks.

*

Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills.

*

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

*

Ability to undertake short-term travel to the projects sites overseas when such opportunity arises.

*

Demonstrate a desire for continual improvement of both self and the team.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge:

*

Fluent and able to work in foreign language – preferably French, or Spanish. Knowledge of other language(s) is an advantage.

*

Understanding of socio-economic research methods and experience in applying these methods.

*

Experience of providing and/or coordinating technical inputs for ESDD reports, Gap Analyses, Environmental and Social Action Plans, international Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, and independent Environmental and Social monitoring reports etc.

*

Demonstrable knowledge of the European Union environmental regulatory framework.

*

Experience managing small assignments/tasks within complex technical assignments, project and /or sub-consultant management.

*

Knowledge and understanding of environmental and social management systems.

*

Some level of understanding of commercial aspects involved in managing projects and environmental and social assignments in project settings.

Qualifications:

*

Qualifications to Master level in a relevant subject including environmental and/or social management, human geography, international development, social development, rural development, ecology or other related subject.

*

Minimum of four years’ professional environmental and/or social experience in a corporate or consultancy environment.

*

Membership of, and/or working towards a recognised professional profile (e.g. chartership) with a relevant Professional Body or organization.
