The Opportunity

#WeAreEDF and are leading the transition to a cleaner, low emission electric future, tackling climate change and helping Britain achieve net zero.

As part of our plan to secure a low-carbon energy future, EDF’s Nuclear New Build (NNB) team is leading an ambitious programme to build a fleet of safe, reliable nuclear power stations in the UK, focussed on two new nuclear power stations, the first since Sizewell B in 1995. The first station is under construction at Hinkley Point C (HPC) in Somerset, and NNB’s ambition is to build a second at Sizewell C (SZC) in Suffolk. The SZC project is currently in the development phase, with UK public policy; financing; commercial and construction arrangements being established. The intention is to begin construction of the project at the end of 2022.

The Engineering Director will direct the engineering functions to ensure that SZC engineering is delivered to the highest standard from inception to operational handover of the SZC project, respecting Nuclear Safety as paramount at all times.

The Role

As Engineering Director, you will lead a team coordinating the delivery of SZC Engineering, initially in the development phase of the SZC project and then later into the construction phase in accordance with the overall Project schedule. This will account for around £1bn of the SZC scope. Your primary focus in the development phase of the project is to secure the capability to replicate most of the reference design (from HPC) and set-up a solid technical base for the project in view of obtaining stakeholder and investor commitment.

Your role is to provide leadership to ensure the effective delivery of engineering activities, while recognising their impacts on the wider project. Key resources will need to be identified, requested and clear roles and responsibilities will need to be communicated. You will be responsible for setting up and managing a near term work plan to drive the project activities.

Specifically, you will be accountable for:

• Securing the delivery of Engineering activities in support of SZC project

• Ensuring the design and installation meets the plant overall performance requirements

• Securing the project replication strategy

• Maintaining a clear status of SZC design compared to HPC reference design

• Managing the SZC end-to-end configuration in close link with HPC design configuration

• Defining the engineering scope to be delivered by each Delivery Programmes (Civils, Nuclear Island, Conventional Island and balance of plant) and managing engineering interfaces between them including any trade-offs that may be required

• Managing the Nuclear Services Agreement (Responsible Designer) contract

• Oversight and coordination of the Site Design Team to ensure coordination on site and alignment with standards and technical delegations

The Skills

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate:

• A degree in an engineering, construction, physics or other related field, chartered preferred

• Excellent understanding of engineering processes

• Track record of delivering projects within a technically complex and dynamic environment whilst ensuring high levels of safety, security and environmental responsibility

• Engineering design, contract and field execution strategies for project delivery

• Procurement and management of complex contracts and close out of commercial claims

• Control of costs; risk; schedule; change; proficient in the use of Earned Value tools

• Experience of successfully engaging groups of stakeholders

• Experience of managing contractors, consultants and other advisors throughout large and complex construction projects, in a regulated environment

• Excellent presentation, influencing and facilitation skills

• Working knowledge of French language an advantage.

• Understanding the needs of quality and how quality is assured and controlled
