About the Role:

WSP Development Infrastructure and Water team, specialises in providing sustainable development infrastructure solutions from feasibility studies, planning, design and through to implementation. Following our appointment to several high profile UK projects, we are seeking to recruit a Senior Engineer to join the team in Birmingham.

The Development Infrastructure and Water team provides high level advice to mainly private sector clients on planning and design issues relating to Highways, Public Realm, Signal Design, Sewerage, Flood Risk Assessment and Management, SuDS, Building Drainage, Earthworks, Flood Protection and Services Co-ordination and Utilities Diversion on Residential, Retail, Industrial and Commercial Developments both in the UK and overseas.

The team also works closely with other WSP disciplines on high profile major multi-disciplinary projects, contributing to the success of the London based teams.

A typical week would include:

* Day-to-day general project management, the delivery of concept studies and strategies with hands on design, leading to planning applications and down to detailed design and construction drawing issue.

* Being active on a number of projects and client accounts at any given time with a main focus on water/drainage. You will be supported by a team of experienced technical staff of various grades, to whom you will be expected to assist and provide guidance and support where appropriate. You are also expected to manage and mentor junior members of staff.

* Client and design team liaison, assisting in the preparation of fee proposals, financial control of projects when acting as a project manager and undertaking business development. It represents an exceptional opportunity for the right candidate.

* You will be responsible for ensuring your projects are delivered to budget, programme and technical standards and meet QA, CDM and SHEQ requirements.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

* Post graduate (or equivalent) experience and either have been awarded or nearing Chartered status (CEng, MICE), with appropriate commercial experience and responsibility. You should be able to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of, and experience of S278 / S38 highway design and detailing, and design of drainage systems for S104 approval.

* The ability to produce masterplans, site appraisals andwritten submissions for planning applications (for example Highway Layout and Drainage Strategies), technical reports, design calculations and construction drawings. You will be well versed in the preparation of drawings for Contract Documents and S38 and S278 Agreements.

* Good written and spoken communication skills and be aware of current and emerging technical and planning guidance. You will be able to direct and check the use of relevant software, for example PDS, Civil 3D and Micro-Drainage. You will also need to have experience of liaison with clients, co-professionals and design teams, and be competent in liaising with highway, water, statutory and local authorities to negotiate the necessary outline and detailed technical approvals.

* A good knowledge of the legal processes, planning, design, design software, technical consents process, adoption and contract procedures for the provision of drainage schemes including SuDS systems and associated infrastructure for new developments and regeneration projects and how to effectively deliver these to achieve a client brief.

* A robust knowledge of the financial and contractual aspects of planning, bidding, and delivering both large and small projects. You will have a good knowledge of the relevant design codes such as Sewers for Adoption, Building Regulations, SuDS Manual, DMRB and Manual for Streets and associated guidance relevant to drainage and the water environment.

* A consultancy or Development background with a bias on private sector work. Ability to seek clarity of instructions, check own work before submitting for approval, agree and meet timescales for items of work.
