What is the purpose of the role?
Working as part of a specialist team to maintain, repair & optimise the performance of a fleet of spark ignition biogas and diesel combined heat and power (CHP) generators. These are located across various sites in the eastern region of the Thames Water estate to which you'll be required to travel.
What makes this role unique?
The specialist engine/generator technician is required to undertake all aspects of planned and reactive engine and system maintenance on assets with outputs from 180kWe to 2MWe. This role will see you working as part of the team that is solely responsible for all the CHP generators and many of the diesel generators for Thames Water. This dynamic area has seen significant investment in the past two years resulting in 70% of the fleet being replaced with MWM engines. In addition to these there are several Jenbacher, Caterpillar and MAN gas engines in the fleet. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of this team of specialised technicians and support staff to ensure the Company's renewable generation target is met.
What will this role involve?
Working as part of a team to carry out all aspects of the planned and reactive maintenance on Thames Water's fleet of CHP spark ignition biogas, and diesel engines.
You'll carry out all planned tasks from basic servicing, inspection and optimising, through to major overhauls.
You'll be proficient at diagnostic work and be able to work unaccompanied or as part of a team.
Working closely with other members of the CHP Maintenance Team, Operations colleagues and suppliers to ensure all maintenance is carried out efficiently, safely and with the least possible downtime.
Ensuring compliance with H&S policy at all times and demonstrating a Zero Compromise attitude towards Health, Safety and Wellbeing Proactively tune and optimise the CHP engines and generator output to provide the most efficient operation (heat and power) for each site, while minimising the impact of our operation on the environment.
You'll complete all service records and reports accurately and in a timely manner.
What are we looking for?
You will have a minimum of ONC, C&G or equivalent qualification in mechanical engineering and more than 3 years' experience with mechanical maintenance on internal combustion engines, ideally gained in a biogas application. Excellent knowledge regarding all aspects of maintenance, diagnostics and repair of diesel and spark ignition engines and associated systems is essential. You'll have excellent fault-finding skills and a methodical to approach to all work. Qualifications/experience of CHP systems and electrical/control systems and gas systems are desirable but not essential. You will have good communication and interpersonal skills, and basic computer literacy. A full, clean UK driving licence is required for this role.
Thames Water information and salary details
The location for this role is flexible but can be Crossness, Beckton, Riverside or Deephams STW as it will predominantly cover these east London sites. We are offering a salary of between £35,000 and £45,000 for 45-hours depending on location, skills and experience. There will be additional payments for overtime and participation of 24/7 stand-by rota, plus an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave, pension scheme and a host of other flexible benefits.
