Due to successfully gaining a number of new commissions and an expanding client base Capita are seeking ambitious and enthusiastic ecologists for an immediate start within our existing ecology teams
This is an exciting opportunity to fulfil a crucial role within our national ecology team, with prospects for career progression and the ability to develop to your full potential within a professional forward thinking, commercial organisation.
Working as an integral member of the ecology team your role will be instrumental in achieving the timely, efficient and thorough completion of projects via desk based studies, surveying and reporting.
The successful applicants will have extensive experience of undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and be competent and able to lead on Extended Phase 1 habitat surveys, with experience of surveying across a range of habitat types and a good knowledge of the principles of habitat management. As part of these surveys you should be competent in assessing sites for their potential to support protected and notable species.
The successful applicant will work as a consultant ecologist within the ecology team. You will undertake a variety of habitat and species surveys, produce survey reports, method statements, design mitigation strategies and provide assistance with the preparation of EPS development licences.
You will work on schemes of all sizes ranging from large infrastructure projects, bridge repair/maintenance, through school/small scale housing projects.
You will be expected to design, plan and lead surveys and will be a key player in the overall project delivery of the team, helping to develop and diversify/expand our expertise. It is desirable that you hold one or more protected species licences.
You will have the opportunity to work within multi-disciplinary project teams (including water and flood management colleagues, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, architects and landscape designers) and contribute to the overall success of a variety of development and infrastructure projects.
While the majority of our work is currently based in the Midlands and Cumbria, we undertake and are working on projects throughout the UK.

Punctuality, reliability and presentability: e.g. attending site for meetings/surveys, undertaking work, meeting deadlines.
Applicants are expected to have an Honours degree in Ecology or a related subject, ideally with a minimum of 3 years consultancy experience or relevant vocational experience.
Full or Associate membership (or eligibility for Associate membership as a minimum) of CIEEM or IEMA
Extensive experience of PEA.
Good level of botany skills and the ability to undertake Extended Phase 1 Habitat Surveys to a high standard
You should have good report writing and IT skills.
You will need a working knowledge of mitigation principles and environmental/wildlife legislation in relation to protected and invasive species.
A full driving licence is essential for this role and a willingness to carry out surveys during unsociable hours and at times away from the office base.
Your key responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:
Lead and undertake Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
Design, plan and undertake a variety of fauna and flora ecological surveys (taking a lead role with Phase 1 habitat surveys and floral or protected species surveys dependent upon individual specialisms)
Produce associated reports to a high quality and in line with the company standards.
Assist with ecological mitigation design and other tasks as necessary.
Train and mentor junior staff as a part of their professional progression/growth.
You will hold one or more protected species licences (Natural England and/or Natural Resources Wales).
You should have a working knowledge of the planning system as it affects ecological issues.
Experience in NVC or lower plant surveys or a desire to develop such skills would be of interest.
Bat and/or great crested newt survey licences are particularly desirable.
Experience of input into BREEAM and/or CEEQUAL Assessments
Capability in GIS would be advantageous
