Ricardo Rail is Ricardo’s rail division. It is a 600-person multi-disciplinary railway consultancy providing expert advisory and independent assurance services across the UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia.
The UK Rail business employees c120 consultants in offices in London, Preston, York, Bristol and Derby.
Due to expansion, Ricardo Rail UK is recruiting for a Design Manager based in Derby to manage our design processes, quality and verification. Responsible for all output from the Design function.
As an industry leading rail consultancy, we are looking to attract experienced design professionals with Rail industry experience, who can demonstrate past achievements in managing a design engineering function.
Ricardo Rail is looking for an individual with a high level of commercial awareness and strong design engineering capabilities to drive the processes and requirements with a back ground in Solidworks 3D CAD Software or similar CAD software.
Experience in managing a team of designers is desired however all highly motivated Design Managers and Senior Product Designers with SolidWorks knowledge will be considered for this position.

Qualifications / Experience:
* A strong track-record in design delivery within the rail sector
* A degree qualification is desirable however all experienced Design Managers or Lead Design Engineers with other qualifications will be considered
* Having a high level of skills in SolidWorks Part and Assembly modelling is essential, as well as ideally having knowledge of PDM systems (e.g. Windchill) in managing design data.
* Considerable demonstrable experience in CAD design software and Design Engineering Processes.
* Substantial experience of working in a professional services environment
* A strong passion for the rail industry
* Versatile, adaptable and able to operate under pressure
* Effective communication skills, written and verbal
* Flexibility to travel in the UK and short durations overseas if required
We would like to discuss this role with experienced Design Engineers or Design Managers who are seeking new challenges within the Derby area.
We are seeking an individual who has previously managed a range of design projects from conceptual phase through to detail design and who is a high achiever and now seeking the opportunity to develop their career further by taking on and leading overall design management. As such, the ideal candidate would be one that has the ability to lead others, while remaining involved in the detail design of a wide range of design projects.
This is not just a technical role as the Design Manager will also be working alongside the Business Managers & Business Directors to win new business, and support clients in defining a project brief. Therefore, having good commercial skills is also an important requirement.
