Job Designation * To design and develop Aircraft Engine Air/Oil System, Thermal Management components with associated components & systems in accordance with company, customer and regulatory requirements * Carry out primary design & performance calculations and evaluations to produce models and design drawings / specifications * Define basic testing parameters which should include preparation of design scheme 3D models and drawings for tender and detailed manufacturing drawings for production utilising the company CAD packages * Support operations with product design & manufacturing issues, and generating and delivering solutions to drive non-conformance, cost and complexity out of the business * Accountable for the delivery of engineering technical solutions to budget and schedule * Be the authority to sign on behalf of the company concessions and airworthiness documentation etc * Ensuring adoption of the very best engineering practices to deliver programmes to meet customer requirements to plan Responsible For: * Mentoring, coaching and training of junior Design office staff expected Job Core Responsibilities * Create, develop and evolve ideas and sketches etc. into drawings and specifications, that comply with company and other standards such as CAA, FAA, MOD and FAR requirements, from which products can be manufactured and sold * Provide design calculations and notes on anticipated stresses within parts manufactured from drawings when subjected to their intended use * Using CAD; provide prototype design models / schemes drawings for purposes of estimating and evaluation of proposed designs. DMU activity, model interrogation and drawing creation * Liaise within the company, with suppliers, customers and others to ensure that all relevant information is used in the preparation of drawings and specifications and that full product optimisation is reached * Investigate faults and failures, participate in Design Reviews, modify drawings and or prepare work packages for others to carry-out as necessary. Coding and use of thermal & pressure balancing analysis software tools to drive new designs and RCCA * Over check other Designers and Detail draughtsmen drawings and work in general. Witness / evaluate results from vibration testing and other tests and analyse the effect on design * Compilation and updating of Design Office Manual / Technical Review Checklist / Lessons Learned Log * Examine/evaluate Non-Conformance part concessions * Provide design solutions to achieve lean manufacturing methods, eliminating concessions and re-work * Advise on the most appropriate tools and procedures, and encourage the use of DFM (Design for manufacture) DFA (Design for assembly). Lead DFMEA on new products * Occasionally visit customers, UK and Overseas for technical reviews, giving presentations, and making decisions on behalf of the company * Identifying project risk, mitigation actions and contingency plans * Leading and managing the engineering input into all the customer meetings such as Initial Technical Coordination Meeting, Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, First Article Inspection and program reviews * Leading and contributing; design to cost and manufacturability activities * Ensuring engineering metrics are maintained to produce engineering deliverables, on time, on budget and to technical performance criteria * Communicating effectively and professionally with customers and suppliers and to manage data transfer * Presenting and participating in Technical Reviews with use of use of a Technical Review checklist, Lesson Learned Log and associated process throughout each phase of the New Product Introduction process. Ensuring that all necessary follow up actions are taken * Prepare and validate Production Acceptance Test documents * Monitor & support the ECR process to progress changes in a timely manner * Support the Operations, Quality, Aftermarket and Facility Maintenance teams with technical support to assist in the smooth running of the business * Review/approval of final design and drawings prior to official release * Review/approval of Engineering Change Request * Ensure all company procedures and standards relating to the Design Office are up to date and incorporated in drawing/documentation preparation * Advise on the most appropriate tools and procedures, and encourage the use of DFx (particularly Design for manufacture & assembly) * Develop the Engineering Departments facilities, hardware and software to enable fulfilment of allocated tasks * Develop appropriate synergies with other engineering functions within the business Job Specifications * Previous experience leading an engineering team in a matrix organization, including an operations and new product introduction environment * Customer facing experience (commercial savvy) * Experience of monitoring, and delivering against a technical project plan * Proven engineering capability and experience to create effective engineered solutions * A comprehensive working knowledge of manufacturing systems, assembly & test * Configuration and change management * B/MEng Degree qualified, [Principle] chartered engineer (eg; IMechE) * 3D CAD & Drafting experience * Analysis software skills (easy 5 / Matlab) desired * Materials and coatings knowledge (aerospace metals) * Team play, lateral thinking and problem solving skills are essential (demonstrable RCCA skills) * Technically Articulate – effective communicator (verbal & written) with a good knowledge of Word and Excel are essential * High work ethic & desire to learn and [Principle] impart learning within the team * Proven ability to interact at all levels with Internal and external functions; suppliers & customers * Commercial Savvy * Strong Organisational skills & proactive in driving solutions * The following would be an advantage, but are not essential: * Previous experience of managing remote teams / design engineering offload (India) * Aerospace/Industrial fluid systems * Awareness of the certification framework within which the work is undertaken Other * <5% overseas travel anticipated
