AECOM is looking for an Associate Director Landscape Architect to build a team in our centrally located, high quality, office in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to develop, build and lead a team in England’s second city with multiple opportunities to work with high profile clients on nationally significant projects. The candidate will be required to develop the client base and expand the opportunities across a variety of market sectors.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience of working in a multi-disciplinary environment and have a clear understanding of and experience across a wide range of sectors. The candidate must have demonstrable experience in business development and work winning so they can bring project opportunities, from landscape planning through to design and implementation, into the team through both the external and internal market. We are looking for an ambitious team player with strong development skills who wishes to lead in the development of innovative, cost effective and buildable solutions in an environment that is collaborative, stimulating and demanding. The role would suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a dynamic team as well as undertake line management and mentoring of graduates on their pathways to chartership.
Nationally our Landscape Architecture team comprises 45 staff and provides one-stop access to a variety of services. The office is ideally located in the city centre, 10 minutes’ walk from Birmingham New Street Station, 3 minutes from the Snow Hill tram stop and adjacent a multi-storey car park. In normal times, the office has a vibrant social and sports calendar as well as regular breakfast networking events. Currently we are mostly working from home and AECOM provides high quality solutions to make that work, which also reflects our corporate philosophy of the importance of a work life balance, branded “Freedom to Grow”.
The team will provide services ranging from feasibility studies, landscape and visual impact assessment, detailed design and construction on a wide range of contracts and supports other AECOM business lines including transport and infrastructure. Our leading clients include HS2, Highways England, Locality, Homes and Communities Agency, the Environment Agency and numerous Local Authorities, as well as leading contractors and developers. We have identified Birmingham as a particular growth market in the near future and this opportunity arises from that and will be shaped by it in terms of ongoing recruitment and office profile.

Neighbourhood planning – urban design studies and proposals for the improvement and creation of new spaces and connectivity within towns

Network Rail Habitat Design Guide
Landscape Implementation and monitoring of flood relief schemes for the Environment Agency.
The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:
Undertake networking across the internal and external markets to raise the profile of the team across the West Midlands and with key clients.
Develop the internal AECOM market and collaborate with all business lines.
Produce drawings using the Autodesk Suite of software, with the necessary level of detail as required for projects at various stages of development: feasibility and optioneering studies, conceptual design, detailed design and construction. Knowledge of the use of BIM will be beneficial.
Produce technical reports.
Undertake presentations to stakeholder groups, lead on landscape design and workshops.
Reporting to the landscape design operating unit leader you will also interface directly with other team members, from graduates to Directors and with other internal design teams.
You will have strong development skills and have the ability to develop and manage the work of others.
Have the technical ability, knowledge and competence to provide guidance to develop and mentor junior staff and undertake a line management role.
Ability to work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary design team.
Establishing strong working relationships with other internal teams.
Compile compelling tender submissions and lead on tender interviews.
Develop the external client base through concerted marketing and business development.
Undertake project management using AECOM’s internal PM software.
Manage projects to meet budgets and programmes.
Be aware of and understand the AECOM procedures, their importance and their application to projects.
You will have experience in working for local authority and private sector clients across a range of sectors.
You will be proficient and experienced user of AutoCAD and the Adobe suite of products to produce high quality technical drawings and details within a live project environment.
Ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders using a variety of media, including workshops and public exhibitions to convey your designs.
Ability to convey ideas and responses to client briefs with written and illustrated technical reports.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience of some, or all, of the following software is also highly desirable: Revit or Bentley/Projectwise.
Ability to communicate and cultivate client relationships.
Full driver’s licence.
