Job Title: Associate Landscape Architect

Location: London

The Role

As a design post the leader must have a landscape architecture background (a Masters or Post Graduate Diploma qualification in Landscape Architecture or Landscape Management) and be LI chartered with at least ten years’ experience in Landscape Architecture, regeneration and mixed use development.

The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding graphics, creative design, report writing and leadership.

Providing a key link into other Arup disciplines the leader will be required to work with leaders in Infrastructure, Environment and Transport and will be comfortable working within a multidisciplinary environment.

The role would report to the leader of Integrated City Planning in London and to the Landscape Design Skills Leader.

Networking both internally within Arup and externally is vital to our business and you would form part of this and encouraged to contribute. Landscape works in a collaborative manner and you are encouraged to contribute by sharing ideas, technical skills and passion.

Regular design reviews and planning charrettes are held and you are invited to attend, contribute and learn more about the work others are doing. We also have a training programme to meet individual development needs. These are usually agreed at the annual appraisal review but can be organised on an ‘as and when’ basis when needed. Professional Chartership (Pathway to Chartership) for landscape architects is encouraged and well supported in the team and we would look to provide mentors, P2C training and mock examinations to support candidates. Consequently we have a very good success rate with candidates in the team.

Candidates should be great teammates and used to working in a multidisciplinary environment. Experience of working on infrastructure projects and for a consultancy will be advantageous.

Requirements and skills

Strategic Business Direction

* Delivery strategic landscape policy, masterplans and advising clients to open up new opportunities;
* Diversifying the Landscape and Integrated City Planning (ICP) business and securing new work in relation to landscape initiatives and master planning, working closely with other Arup subject areas in other UK offices;
* Developing relationships and working closely with Arup infrastructure, transport and environment colleagues;
* Working with external agents and architecture practices on multi-disciplinary projects and tender opportunities;
* Attending/leading project interviews and coordinating the preparation of tenders and fee proposals for new work;
* Identifying and promoting the Landscape and ICP business, crafting a distinct identity for our landscape team to positively distinguish Arup and build an outstanding market offer;
* Liaison with internal and external clients as well as working with other teams within the business; and
* Assist within the UK with other large scale urban design projects and offer general specialist urban design advice (as relevant to the applicant).

Leadership

* Inspire project teams with a vision that is understood and communicated to all levels in the team;
* Ability to build support within teams and externally with client steering groups;
* Lead effectively to ensure delivery high quality outputs;
* Sustaining the growth in staff, turnover and profit of the business and to support the leadership team in the recruitment and appointment of new staff; and
* Working with senior staff to ensure effective performance management and have ability to deal with poor performance (where it arises).

Running a Business

* Act as Project Manager in line with Arup expectations;
* Lead successful commercial outcomes for all projects;
* Take planning and leadership responsibilities alongside the landscape leadership team;
* Ensure that profit and cash-flow expectations are delivered in accordance with the operating plan;
* Work with senior staff to ensure resourcing is adequately run to suit the overall needs of the business achieving target billability levels for the group;
* Work with senior staff to ensure technical / quality reviews of outputs;
* Act as a technical overseer of quality;
* Undertake Client Satisfaction Reviews and act on key findings

Crucial Skills, Knowledge and Experience

* Demonstrable evidence of experience of working in a project management role.
* Experienced Landscape professional, with CMLI accreditation and significant consultancy experience;
* A designer with strong visual communication skills and an ambition to build a team with an outstanding identity and market offer;
* Demonstrable track record in business development, including supervising work winning strategies and significant client relationship development and networking experience;
* Commercial excellence in structuring bids that are deliverable, profitable and ultimately enhance client relationships and our reputation in the market;
* A clear understanding of the landscape markets in the UK; and
* Validated Project Manager level technical and commercial management experience.

Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience

* Knowledge of the regional markets, the developers and the local planning authorities;
* Experience of mentoring, coaching and ideally delivering formal training in business development skills;
* Specific sector experience in areas such as infrastructure, commercial development, urban regeneration, residential, education, health, energy, historic buildings and landscape planning strategic policy;
* Has previous track record in building long lasting relationships with clients.
* Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams; and
* Ability to attract, develop and retain individuals to complement the existing team.
