What is the purpose of the role?
This is an exciting opportunity to develop a career in Quantity Surveying. You will join an established and expanding commercial team and will be given the opportunity to progress all the way through to becoming a Chartered Quantity Surveyor. In this role you will learn to provide commercial advice to your colleagues in procurement, contract management and operations, in order to help Thames Water obtain value for money and excellent customer service from its supply chain. This role combines regular monthly validation of payment applications and reporting, along with handling more reactive tasks and assisting with the commercial aspects of project work.

Working within the Commercial Team you will gain insight into how the UK's largest water company selects and manages its suppliers across a wide spectrum of services, from supplying pumps to repairing leaks, and recruiting temporary staff through to managing our facilities. This role offers you the opportunity to become part of the Thames Water family and work to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor. In this role you will be enrolled onto a Degree in Quantity Surveying, depending on your existing qualifications. Thames Water will fund this in full, subject to a learning contract. The team also has a very successful structured APC training programme with a support network of a number of Chartered Quantity Surveyors, RICS APC Assessors and colleagues studying to become MRICS.
What will this role involve?
Reporting against budget, annual and final accounting, estimating and forecasting;
Analysing spend against budget and ensuring that any issues are communicated;
Working with Finance to ensure that all financial systems are updated to time, cost and quality;
Helping to identify any supplier performance issues and then ensure that corrective actions are implemented;
Providing commercial advice and support to the business and helping to resolve commercial disputes if they arise;
Assessing applications for payment against the contract;
Analysing and Interpreting data to inform commercial decision making;
Providing Commercial Support to Procurement exercises;
Advising on value for money.
What are we looking for?
Evidence of desire and commitment to pursue a career in Quantity Surveying, including aptitude and drive for undertaking additional qualifications alongside work;
A-Level qualifications or their equivalent are required;
C Grade or above in GCSE Mathematics;
Excellent attention to detail;
Good IT skills and competence, especially in Microsoft Excel;
Good verbal and written communication skills;
Work experience in related areas, e.g. in the water or construction industry, would be beneficial;
Knowledge of the UK Water Industry and how it is regulated.
Thames Water information and salary details
This role is based at our head office in Reading. We are offering a salary of up to £30,000, depending on skills and experience.
