To assist the management team in the running of Rail Grinding Machines, ensuring Rail Grinders work to their optimum performance, achieve a consistent high level of production.

Role dictates that you would be an integral part of the operational crew and be responsible for all aspects of the allocated machine.

Responsible for the rostering and travel arrangements of crew, work closely with the other Assistant Fleet Managers to ensure all costs such as overtime, hotels and travel are kept to an absolute minimum.

Overseeing a robust development program for continuous improvement operator training and assessments in order to maximise the team's performance in achieving a consistently high-quality output.


Direct and monitor all staff during the operation of the asset, ensuring maintenance and operations is carried out effectively, ensuring all reports are completed timeously and correctly.

Evaluate processes and re-engineer to improve efficiencies

Support the implementation of any innovation

Ensure the safe working of the asset and all staff for during the grinding and maintenance operation

Timesheet authorisation and justification for direct reports

Provide assessments for ongoing development of direct reports

Carry out Safety Tours and inspections

Responsible for the training and assessment of direct line reporting staff.

Produce training improvement plans and processes for implementation within Colas competency systems.

On Call duties for all Rail Grinders. On Call turns balanced out between other managers

Compile improvements to the vehicle training documents

Oversee the machine maintenance outages, ensuring that all defects and repairs have been captured and included in the plan.

Liaise with the Maintenance Manager, Reliability Engineer and Technical Support Engineers. Implementation of any improvements identified

Assist in maintaining quality systems, machine safety packs and stabling database by continually monitoring, reviewing and making recommendations for updating as necessary

Provide support for continuous personal improvement to the team.

Attend meetings as required

Stand in for the Fleet Manager when requested to do so

Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.

Supervision of Rail Grinder staff and monitor performance against required standards.

To promote safe working practices and ensure implementation and compliance to the Network Rail Safety Management System.

Ensuring that a full safe system of work is set up at all times for the protection of staff.

Responsible for the pre-function test of the Rail Grinder prior to operational shifts commencing.

Assist the Network Rail customer representatives with on-site / Rail Grinder issues, organise detailed working arrangements.

Report all breakdowns, operational incidents, environmental incidents and damage to the infrastructure in real-time to Colas Control. Collating detailed reports and photographs, ensuring that all evidence is collected.

Capture all delays from stabling point to stabling point non-productive time and record on the DWR form

Report Fuel, water levels Colas Control at the end of transit/production shift,

Monitor and maintain correct stock levels of stores/spares on the machines to an optimum level on the machines and in FAMS.

Ensuring a full and detailed description of any faults are logged in FAMS after every transit /production shift.

Develop and promote positive working relationships within the Rail Grinding teams.

To ensure that accurate shift reports are produced and submitted, in an agreed format and timely manner. I.e. Daily Work Return forms DWR, pre-start checks /function tests, Rail Grinding booking on/off, defect logbooks and FAMS.

Carry out Employee/Machine/Van audits and PGI's at agreed intervals.

Ensure that machine administration is up to-date and submitted to the office on a regular basis.

Coach staff as necessary to improve their performance

Carry out personal development reviews (PDR)

Liaise with Roster/Planning coordinators to deliver staff scheduling orders, raisings issues in a timely manner

Participate in Accident / Incident reporting and investigation as instructed and in accordance with the Network Rail Safety Management System.

Participate in regular safety and performance meetings with the Operations Manager and Fleet Manager

To attend telephone conferences as and when required.

Ensure that all Rail Grinding machines are cleaned and maintained to the highest standards possible and at all times, no exceptions.

Reduction in costs in overtime- time management is paramount

Reduction in consumables and courier costs

Maintain balance stock of components at all times, minimum and maximum levels


Contact with Colas Rail UK Directors, Managers and Staff at all levels.

Frequent contact and interaction with operating staff


The job holder will have a proven track record in both operational and maintenance of On Track Machines, knowledge of Railgrinder would be desirable. The role requires the holder to have served a recognised apprenticeship and hold transferrable qualifications. It is also a requirement to hold an unrestricted Sentinel PTS and have a full medical.

The ideal person will have

Experience of working with mainline grinders

Proven track record in improving effectiveness in operations and maintenance activities

Innovator who can take ideas from conception to implementation

A broad Knowledge of Railway geography and operating practices

Knowledge of Railhead profile management issues and Rail Grinding Techniques

Experience of Grinding operations

Recognised Assessor qualification or working to towards qualification

Recognised Trainer qualification or working towards qualification

Full driving license


Fire qualification

Emergency First Aid

Designated Person (DP)

Assessed as competent to maintain and operate Rail Grinding Machines

Investigation and analysis skills for root cause analysis. To possess good IT, communication, motivational, problem solving and excellent decision-making skills.

To be self-motivated and innovative

Able to lead a team

Willing to take on responsibility

Works well under operational pressure

To have a comprehensive knowledge of railway operations, and also have a good understanding of track maintenance work.

To have the ability to impart knowledge to others in a workplace environment

People Management

To assist in the management of Rail Grinding staff across the allocated machines. Ensuring that all staff are safe at all times, working and mentoring of staff to ensure that targets are met safely and to time specified.

Decision Making Authority and Impact

Liaising with the Rail Grinding Management team Colas Control regarding any curtail of production.

If production is cancelled then alternative work supplied. I.e. repairing of faults, cleaning of driving /operating cabs, carry out innovatory of parts and tools in place of the cancelled production shift.

Customer Service and Interaction

The key contact is Network Rail which you will have to liaise with clients representatives where necessary, also their technical planning coordinators.

You will have to report to the Senior Rail Grinding Team on a daily basis.

To have the ability to meet and work with our customers to resolve Rail Grinding issues.


Comply with legislation and industry standards i.e. Rule Book.

Comply with Colas Rail rules, procedures and working practices.

Undertake all work in a safe manner.

Report all accidents, and incidents with the potential to cause injury or property damage.

Where necessary provide advice and support to inexperienced colleagues.
