Electrical engineers design, build and maintain electrical control system, machinery and equipment. If you enjoy working as a part of a team, solving problems and structuring your workload then this job could be for you. Before you can consider this role, you will need to complete a foundation degree, HNC, HND or degree in electrical engineering.
As an electrical engineer you're involved in:
Building services (lighting, heating, ventilation).
Manufacturing & construction.
Renewable energy sources.
Power generation (transmission & distribution)
Your duties will include:
New technical developments: feasibility studies.
Project planning: CAD and circuit diagrams.
Estimation of costing & timelines.
Coordinating technicians and craftspeople.
Testing all installations and systems, with analysis of test data.
Meet safety regulations.
Oversee inspection and maintenance programmes.
Attending meetings, writing reports & presentations.
You will usually work to a 40 hour week, with overtime and longer days possible on bigger projects. Your salary will start at around £21,000 - £25,000 a year, but an experienced electrical engineer should expect anywhere from £25,000 - £45,000.
A skilled Electrical Engineer will:
Have excellent maths, science & IT skills.
Produce and interpret technical diagrams, analyse complex problems and offer possible solutions.
Explain design ideas clearly.
Strong communication skills & show strong decision-making skills.
Manage a budget with clear organisation.
Hold a good understanding of electrical health and safety regulations.
